A powerful ‘gig-theatre’ retelling of a savage Greek tragedy, set in the 1980s.
Oxford’s Offbeat fringe theatre festival is now in its second year and this June brings a unique new company Pecho Mama and their production Medea Electronica to the studio theatre at the Old Fire Station on Tuesday 27 June.
Euripides’ original play Medea is best known for its horrific and glorified act of infanticide by a mother. In this version, the drama is played out amidst the anarchy of a live gig; an all-original mash up of contemporary, cinematic soundscapes and 1980s Electronica.
The production is performed by a new collaboration of musicians, Pecho Mama, whose experimental sound has been likened to Bon Iver, Roisin Murphy and Pink Floyd.
Medea Electronica is a wild and imaginative retelling of the Greek tragedy, set in the 1980s with its technological advances and social turbulence. On discovering her husband’s deceit and betrayal, Medea is driven to embark on a journey of savage revenge and destruction.
Pecho Mama was founded in 2016 and is led by Artistic Director Mella Faye, the centre piece to the show, providing fierce vocals reminiscent to Alison Mosshart and Karen O.
Mella is joined by Sam Cox on drums and Alex Stanford on keyboards.
Blurring the lines between theatre and live music, the company creates raw, savage, beautiful and challenging theatre. Presenting the tragic tale of Medea with an avant-garde, experimental edginess.
Mella Faye is an actor, musician and director.
From 1999-2002 Mella toured extensively as Mella Faye & The Big Band. Between 2006-2012 she set up and ran The Hurly Burly Theatre Cafe, which toured major British arts festivals and more recently co-founded ARTBARS.
